NADA were approached by City of Sydney to provide an Aboriginal design to be used as the hero artwork for NAIDOC in the City 2015.
Suzy Evans artwork, Night Skies was chosen and was translated onto banners and light boxes throughout the city during NAIDOC week.
The design was also used as the backdrop for the main stage at NAIDOC celebrations in Hyde Park as you can see in the featured image with Emma Donovan in the foreground.
Suzy Evans is from the Kamilaroi people of Moree in North-West New South Wales and it’s from this connection that she draws her artistic inspiration.
Her works of acrylic paints on wood, paper and canvas are “colour abstract representations of cultural symbols.”
Suzy’s inspiration for this painting came from a story told to her by Aunty Rose Fernando from Lightening Ridge. The story goes that the stars in the night sky, known as ‘twinkling stars’ to non-Aboriginal people are known as ‘Laughing Stars’ by Aboriginal people.
The sky is as sacred to Aboriginal people as being on country.
